Picture this: You’ve been on top of your health journey by getting enough sleep, eating balanced meals, taking your supplements, and practicing daily self-care. Still, you’re seeking something more—something to enhance your health from the inside that reveals itself on the outside. Enter colostrum.
Colostrum, or as many call it, “liquid gold,” is rapidly gaining well-deserved praise and recognition for its incredible health benefits (more on those shortly). But although colostrum is all the rage right now, many of my clients are still unfamiliar with what it is and how it can optimize their health. If you find yourself in that same boat, know I’ve got you covered. Keep reading to learn why I love this “liquid gold” and why I think you should, too.
What is Colostrum?
If you or someone close to you has given birth, you may remember those first few days of breastmilk production—thicker and yellower than the months to come. This creamier milk with a yellow or golden tint is colostrum, and every mammal naturally produces it after giving birth because it is so good for newborns. Colostrum has more fat, protein, vitamins and minerals, hormones, growth factors, and less lactose than mature milk, making it a key element in supporting a baby’s health.
Knowing that colostrum is liquid gold for babies, researchers and health experts had to explore if colostrum can benefit adults, too. TLDR: it does. However, human colostrum is reserved for newborns. What we find on the market is bovine colostrum, and it is still a dream addition to your health journey that nurtures and heals.
Nutrients in Colostrum
Colostrum is a protein powerhouse with essential amino acids that serve as the building blocks for muscle, tissue, and enzymes. These proteins, including lactoferrin, lactalbumin, and casein, play critical roles in supporting growth, repair, and metabolic health, ensuring your body functions at its best.
Vitamins and Minerals
Bovine colostrum is loaded with essential vitamins and minerals, providing various nutrients to fuel your body. From vitamin A, which promotes healthy vision and immune function, to vitamin D, crucial for bone health and mood regulation, colostrum helps nourish you from within. Most vitamins are higher in concentration within colostrum than mature milk, especially vitamins B2, B12, E, and D. As for minerals, colostrum is richer in calcium, copper, iron, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. Calcium is important for bone strength, copper and iron for red blood cell production, zinc for immune support, magnesium for muscle and metabolic function, manganese for enzyme activation, and phosphorus for bone and teeth health.
Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins, including IgA, IgG, and IgM, potent antibodies that protect the body from pathogens. These antibodies enhance your immune response by targeting harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi, making you more resilient to illness.
Colostrum contains several antimicrobials that have been shown to fight off bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella, but the most notable might have to be lactoferrin. Lactoferrin, a multifunctional protein, prevents pathogenic bacteria from attaching to mucosal surfaces in the gut and throughout the body, helping maintain a healthy microbial balance and supporting gastrointestinal health.
You can also find certain white blood cells and polypeptides in colostrum that help combat excessive inflammatory responses, even from common and outdoor allergens. These bioactive compounds help modulate the immune system, promoting a balanced and efficient defense against infections and supporting tissue repair and regeneration.
Benefits of Colostrum
Studies have revealed that colostrum can holistically strengthen immunity by naturally fortifying the body’s defense mechanisms. Packed with IgA and IgG in particular, colostrum provides defense against pathogens to boost immunity. Colostrum consumption empowers the body to stay strong and better equipped to fight off illness and maintain optimal health.
Research also shows substantial evidence that colostrum can help manage gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Colostrum contains elements like Lactoferrin that strengthen the gut barrier, preventing conditions like leaky gut, while its antimicrobial properties maintain an ideal balance of gut flora. So, colostrum is a fantastic holistic solution for maintaining a thriving gut environment and supporting healthy digestion.
My Experience with Colostrum
Ever since I started taking colostrum, I’ve been able to transform my health in new ways. For three years, I struggled with eczema on three fingers that I just could not get rid of. And for most of my life, I dealt with frequent canker sores, which often flared up in response to stress and caffeine consumption. However, once I began incorporating colostrum into my daily routine, I experienced an unbelievable turnaround. Within just two weeks, my eczema disappeared completely and has yet to return. I also went an entire year without a single canker sore. Even more exciting, I noticed I could enjoy a wider variety of foods without experiencing discomfort or digestive issues. Colostrum has felt like a game-changer for me, and I find it to feel 10 times better than collagen in terms of efficacy and overall well-being. Even my clients have reported similar positive outcomes that mirror mine: similar symptoms have improved, including skin issues clearing up, enhanced immunity, and stronger and healthier hair, skin, and nails. The best brand that I take personally and recommend to clients is ARMRA – specifically the unflavored one.
The journey to optimal health is always evolving and never-ending, but don’t let that discourage you from embarking on it.
