Is Drinking Water Enough to Stay Hydrated? Here Is How I Get My Electrolytes

Water is the essence of life, as in, we cannot survive without it for more than two days! Drinking water is crucial to the health of urinary, digestive, and nervous systems, as well as our brains, hearts, kidneys and skin. To help with staying hydrated, I love using Ultima Replenisher Hydrating Electrolyte Powder, a delicious, paleo-, keto-, and vegan-friendly Electrolyte replenisher that is free from sugar, calories, carbs, gluten, and GMOs.

Why Is Staying Hydrated so Important?

Proper hydration is the key to maintaining our blood volume and regulating our temperature, moving food and transporting nutrients throughout our bodies, and lubricating our joints and internal organs. Water structures our cells and keeps our hearts functioning properly—and we cannot so much as contract a muscle without it. Living beings require proper hydration to flush out toxins, help satiate us, keep our minds sharp and our blood pressure healthy, keep our skin moist, and help prevent stones from forming.

Given that the brain is about 70% water and the adult body is about 60-65% water, a deficit as small as 2% of our body weight in water can result in reduced cognitive performance. A lack of proper hydration can result in dry mouth, fatigue, urinary issues, headache, extreme thirst, foggy head, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Chronic dehydration can manifest in the form of spasms, tension in the neck or jaw, constipation, vomiting, muscle pains, mood imbalances, vision impairment, issues with memory and cognitive function, trouble concentrating, hemorrhoids, and heart problems.

What are Electrolytes and Why Must We Replenish Them?

Between 60 and 75 percent of Americans do not drink enough water. I have met people who have experienced debilitating chronic headaches to the point they could not even get out of bed some days and were cured simply by hydrating. But when it comes to staying properly hydrated, it is not only about drinking enough H₂O. There is another component: electrolytes.

The term “electrolytes” refers to the calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphate, and chloride in our bodies, which regulate our heartbeat and blood clotting, and allow for muscle contraction, nerve signaling, cell division, and more. Common ways we lose electrolytes are through urination, blood, and other bodily fluids. Exercise uses up even more, mainly by way of sweat. Being low on electrolytes can negatively impact virtually every bodily function and system that you can think of, including muscle contraction, blood pressure, nerve function, and digestion. Low electrolyte levels can result in muscle aches, restlessness, insomnia, fever, joint pain, confusion, numbness, and more.

Why I Use Ultima to Support Effective Hydration

The brain, central nervous system, and muscle system rely on electrolytes to function and are especially vulnerable to damage when your levels are depleted. Not maintaining electrolyte levels can also result in anxiety, difficulty sleeping, and muscle cramps. While we can replenish various electrolytes through a diverse and mostly plant-based diet, we do not always have the opportunity to eat a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and table salt (for sodium and chloride ions) every day. That is why Ultima Replenisher Hydrating Electrolyte Powder is a staple in my kitchen. It contains all six electrolytes to aid in nerve transmission, heathy joint and tendons, energy conversion, cell and tissue repair, muscle contraction and expansion, and more.
