Feeling Like Your Body Is Working Against You? Start With These Labs.

When clients tell me they feel off, it’s rarely one clear symptom. It’s usually a combination of lower energy, brain fog that comes and goes, sleep that no longer feels restorative, mood changes, or weight that feels harder to regulate than it used to. Nothing feels extreme on its own, but together it creates a quiet sense that the body isn’t responding the way it once did. There’s often frustration in that space, especially when someone is doing many of the “right” things and still doesn’t feel like themselves.

This is where lab work becomes such a powerful tool. Not as a diagnosis or something to fixate on, but as a way to understand how the body is actually functioning beneath the surface. Many people have had basic bloodwork run and were told everything looks normal, yet normal simply reflects broad ranges that don’t account for what optimal function looks like for the individual. When we look at the right biomarkers through a more thoughtful lens, patterns begin to emerge that explain why someone feels the way they do. If something feels off and you want clarity rather than guesswork, these are the labs I like to start with.

Why these biomarkers?

Vitamin D: It plays a far larger role in the body than most people realize. It influences immune resilience, mood, energy production, hormone signaling, and inflammation regulation. When levels are low, clients often notice fatigue, more frequent illness, mood changes, or a general sense of depletion. Testing helps determine whether the body has the foundational support it needs or is running on empty.

Hs-CRP: This is one of the clearest ways to understand whether the body is inflamed. Even low-grade inflammation can quietly impact energy, metabolism, hormones, and long-term aging. An elevated result doesn’t tell us the cause, but it does tell us something needs attention. This marker often explains why someone feels stuck or run down despite healthy habits.

Ferritin & Iron Saturation: These markers show how well the body is storing iron and delivering oxygen to tissues. When levels are too low, symptoms can show up as anxiety, burnout, breathlessness, hair shedding, or steady afternoon crashes. Iron also plays a key role in thyroid function and mitochondrial energy production. Testing both together gives a much clearer picture than serum iron alone.

Full Thyroid Panel: The thyroid influences metabolism, digestion, temperature regulation, mood, cognitive function, and energy. Looking at more than just TSH allows us to see whether hormones are being produced, converted, and used efficiently at the cellular level. Many people are told their thyroid is normal while subtle imbalances go unnoticed. A full panel helps explain persistent fatigue, weight changes, and brain fog that don’t respond to surface-level fixes.

CBC with Differential: This offers insight into immune function, oxygen delivery, nutrient status, and overall resilience. Patterns here can signal underlying deficiencies, chronic stress, low-grade infections, or inflammation before bigger issues arise. Even when values fall within range, trends tell a deeper story about how supported the body truly is. This is one of the most under-appreciated but informative labs.

Fasting Insulin: One of the earliest markers of metabolic strain. Elevated levels suggest the body is working harder than it should to regulate blood sugar, often long before glucose or A1C move out of range. This can drive weight gain, energy crashes, inflammation, and hormonal disruption over time. Testing insulin reveals how efficiently the body is managing fuel.

A1C: This reflects blood sugar patterns over the past few months, offering insight into long-term metabolic stability. Even slight elevations can accelerate inflammation, oxidative stress, and cellular aging. This marker helps explain energy swings, cravings, and why weight or mood may feel more reactive. It’s a valuable lens for understanding how daily habits add up over time.

If something hasn’t felt quite right and you keep hearing that everything looks fine, this is your reminder that you’re allowed to ask better questions. You know your body best, and advocating for yourself with your doctor is an important part of the process, especially when symptoms don’t match the reassurance you’re being given. Running the right labs and understanding them in context can bring clarity, direction, and relief. If you’d rather not navigate that alone, this is exactly the work I do with clients. We can run these biomarkers together, interpret what they’re actually telling us, and build a plan that supports your body in a way that feels grounded, personalized, and sustainable.
