Did you know that most of our regular, everyday products are filled with chemicals and toxins? Unfortunately, they’re pretty unavoidable as they are embedded in our environments. We’re exposed to toxins more than we’d like to think, but taking control of what we bring into our homes can make a world of difference in reducing that exposure and optimizing our health. The first step is identifying the common household products most contributing to our toxic load. Many of the everyday items we rely on contain hidden dangers to our health and could quietly compromise our well-being. As a holistic nutritionist, I’ve put together a list of household products I recommend ditching to help create a healthier, cleaner home for you and your family. You can also shop all of my favorite items here.
Air Fresheners
Air fresheners can really set a tone for a room, whether you’re going for warm and inviting or fresh and revitalizing. However, most of them also come with hidden toxins. So many name brands contain synthetic fragrances and phthalates, which can disrupt hormones and impact reproductive health. They also release volatile organic compounds that irritate the respiratory system and contribute to indoor air pollution. Some even contain carcinogens like formaldehyde or benzene, potentially contributing to long-term health risks. So, rather than enhancing our home’s air quality, these products can actually compromise it.
Antibacterial Sprays
Antibacterial sprays are often marketed as essential but can come with serious health risks if we don’t use the right ones. Many contain triclosan, a chemical linked to hormone disruption and thyroid issues. Overuse can contribute to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a major public health concern. These sprays may also kill beneficial microbes that support a healthy microbiome, while their harsh chemicals can irritate skin and respiratory systems. Ironically, they can introduce toxins that weaken the body’s natural defenses instead of promoting a truly clean environment.
Non-Stick Cooking Pans
Non-stick cooking pans are convenient, but their chemical coatings can be dangerous to our health. When heated to high temperatures, pans coated with polytetrafluoroethylene can release toxic fumes, causing “Teflon flu.” Older pans may contain perfluorooctanoic acid, a chemical linked to cancer and developmental issues. Over time, the coating can degrade, allowing harmful substances to leach into our food. Safer alternatives like stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic cookware offer healthier, toxin-free options. I recommend making the switch to clean cookware ASAP!
Air Fryers
We usually see air fryers marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional frying, but we need to be conscientious about their potential health effects, too. Many air fryers have the same non-stick coatings, like the Teflon pans, containing chemicals that release toxic fumes when overheated. Additionally, the high-temperature cooking process in air fryers can create acrylamides, a potentially carcinogenic compound formed when starchy foods are cooked at high heat. Over time, repeated exposure to these compounds may increase health risks.
Dishwasher Detergents
Dishwasher detergents tend to have ingredients like chlorine, phosphates, and artificial fragrances that can clean food residues but leave toxic residues on your plates, which may then be ingested at your next meal. Further, phosphates in detergents can contribute to water pollution, compromising our outside environment, too.
Laundry Detergent
Synthetic fragrances, dyes, and petrochemicals commonly found in conventional laundry detergents can irritate the skin, trigger allergies, and disrupt hormones. The skin is our largest organ, and these chemicals often linger on clothes after washing, transferring to your skin and potentially causing long-term health issues. Continued exposure can contribute to chronic skin conditions, respiratory problems, and hormone imbalances.
Scented Trash Bags
Who doesn’t love the idea of a scented trash bag to mask trash odors? They’re great in theory, but the fragrances used in these bags are typically synthetic and may include phthalates, known endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormone balance. These chemicals can trickle into the environment, especially when the bags are exposed to heat or moisture. The scent additives can also exacerbate respiratory issues, particularly for those with asthma or allergies. In addition, the plastic used in many scented trash bags is non-biodegradable, which isn’t ideal for the environment.
Hand Soaps
Many popular hand soaps may leave your hands feeling clean and smelling good. Still, they often are formulated with synthetic fragrances and preservatives, such as parabens, that can cause skin flare-ups and allergies. Some hand soaps also contain triclosan, which can be detrimental to our health.
Oven Cleaners
Oven cleaners are effective at removing tough grease and grime, but they often include caustic ingredients like lye and chlorine bleach, which can cause skin burns, respiratory complications, and eye damage if not handled properly. The fumes from these chemicals can linger in the air, impacting breathing and potentially damaging our health with prolonged exposure. These chemicals can also leave residues on the oven that may be absorbed into food during cooking.
Carpet Cleaners
Common ingredients in carpet cleaners include formaldehyde, petroleum-based solvents, and synthetic fragrances that can irritate the skin, eyes, and lungs. These chemicals can also linger in carpet fibers, releasing toxins into the air and worsening air quality in the home. I typically avoid chemical-based carpet cleaners are opt for more natural options whenever possible.
Wood and Furniture Polish
Similar to carpet cleaners, formaldehyde, ammonia, and synthetic fragrances are common substances found in wood and furniture polish. The polish can leave toxic residues on furniture that may be absorbed by the skin or inhaled. Over time, exposure to these chemicals may lead to hormonal complications and overall lower well-being.
