Spring Cleaning Tips for the Mind, Body, & Soul

Spring is in full effect, which means the interwebs are brimming with content about spring cleaning. From wiping down overlooked baseboards to swapping out the color of your throw pillows, there is truly nothing like a good spring refresh. Every year, I look forward to sprucing up my home to welcome in the new season, but I like to take my spring cleaning one (or maybe a few) step further: I spring-clean my life.

While it’s obvious when physical clutter starts to pile up in our homes, we don’t always recognize the clutter building from within. Many of us (myself included) are always so “on the go” all year round that we forget to take the time to pause, reflect, and renew externally and internally. But this is the season to cleanse, de-stress, and re-center ourselves to create our dream lives that align with our health goals. So, I make it a point every spring to refresh not only my physical living space but also my mind, body, and soul. After some years of practice, I’ve locked down my tried and true methods for detoxing and replenishing that I want to share with all of you. Keep reading to learn my top tips for feeling your best mentally, physically, and spiritually this spring.

Spring Cleaning for the Mind

Prioritize Sleep

Sleep is fundamental for healthy well-being. We need seven to nine hours of high-quality sleep for cognitive functioning, mood, mental health, and cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and metabolic health (I push for the full nine whenever possible!). On the other hand, if we don’t sleep well enough, we increase our risk of chronic stress, gastrointestinal conditions, inflammation, mood disorders, and reduced quality of life. Ensure you get enough rest each night to recharge your mind for optimal health. And if you haven’t been, spring is a great time to re-prioritize sleep.

Get Daily Sunlight

Take advantage of the longer days and soak up some sunlight daily. Exposure to sunlight triggers the body’s production of vitamin D, essential for bone health, immune function, and mood regulation. Natural light helps regulate the body’s internal clock, promoting better sleep patterns and overall energy levels. Sunlight also stimulates the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter linked to feelings of happiness, which can help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety. Enjoying the warmth and brightness as springtime sunlight nourishes the body from within.

Meditate

Meditation is one of my favorite tools for cleansing the mind. Regular practice cultivates inner peace, releasing cluttered thoughts and stress. It sharpens focus, reduces anxiety, and promotes relaxation, rejuvenating the mind and restoring balance. Meditation provides a sacred space for self-discovery and personal growth, which is especially key in the springtime.

Journal

When you put pen to paper and let your thoughts flow, you can free your mind from any negative thoughts and emotions that have accumulated over time. Writing allows for reflection and introspection, allowing us to explore feelings, insights, and personal experiences. Through journaling, we can gain perspective on challenges and set intentions for growth. This practice promotes self-awareness and reduces stress, creating a sense of renewal and rejuvenation as spring unfolds.

Spring Cleaning for the Body

Spend More Time in Nature

So much of our time is spent indoors and in front of a screen, which is why I emphasize spending more time outside during the spring months. Being in nature can improve our physical wellness by reducing cortisol levels, muscle tension, and the risk of developing heart disease. Also, nature’s sights, sounds, and smells have a soothing effect on the mind, creating a sense of relaxation and clarity of thought. By prioritizing outdoor activities in spring, we can enhance our physical health and nurture our mental and emotional health.

Update Your Bloodwork

Resetting your bloodwork for spring is a proactive approach to optimizing your health. Blood work tells us what’s really going on inside our bodies before it may even manifest on the outside. Use this information to tailor your diet, supplements, and lifestyle choices to support optimal health and vitality. By addressing any underlying issues and focusing on preventive care, you can ensure your body is primed for the energy and renewal that spring brings.

Break a Sweat

During the colder months and around the holidays, it’s easier to lose motivation to exercise. So, I welcome exercise, especially in the spring. Physical activity reduces disease risk factors, like hypertension and insulin resistance, which helps prevent the development of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It also helps improve mental health and overall quality of life, making it a perfect addition to a spring-cleaning routine.

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is important for maintaining and promoting health. Water is essential for regulating body temperature, aiding digestion, and supporting organ function. Further, adequate hydration flushes out toxins, maintains skin health, and enhances cognitive function. Therefore, it’s important to prioritize hydration by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, especially during warmer weather, to support overall health.

Heal Your Gut

A healthy gut microbiome is crucial for optimizing our health. When we introduce the right amounts of good bacteria into our gut, we support proper digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune function. Focusing on gut health can alleviate digestive issues such as bloating, gas, and constipation while enhancing our immune system against seasonal allergies. Incorporating probiotic-rich foods like kombucha, kefir, and sauerkraut into your diet can help restore gut balance and promote optimal digestive health. Fuel with Spring Foods

I always prioritize consuming in-season fruits and vegetables because they taste better and are more nutrient-dense. Produce harvested in its appropriate season has the opportunity to mature fully on the plant, resulting in higher nutrient density compared to crops picked prematurely. It also means the produce is more likely to be local rather than transported far distances, which protects the nutrients. So, this spring, look for new ways to incorporate a variety of foods like apples, asparagus, strawberries, carrots, and peas into your daily meals.

Spring Cleaning for the Soul

Embrace Plant Medicine

One of the more controversial ways I like to renew my energy for spring is by embarking on a plant medicine journey. Plant medicine allows us to wipe our slates clean in a way that is far more intense and efficient than most other methods. On journeys, you will dive deeper within yourself, obtaining the introspection required to declutter your internal energy in a profound way. However, one word of caution as plant medicine journeys have become increasingly popular is to make sure you are practicing one-on-one with a professional rather than in a large group to ensure you are super protected. Manifest Your Dream Life

Manifesting your dream life is a power spring-cleaning practice to create positive changes. By envisioning the life we desire and aligning our thoughts, beliefs, and actions with our goals, we can manifest abundance, joy, and fulfillment. Spring cleaning isn’t just about decluttering our physical spaces; it’s also about clearing out limiting beliefs, doubts, and fears that may be holding us back from living our best lives. Manifesting helps us release the old and welcome the new, stepping into a future filled with unlimited potential and possibilities.

Practice Self-Love

Practicing self-love involves nurturing and embracing every aspect of ourselves. In my closet, tucked away in a frame, I have a picture of myself as a young child. When I take that picture out, I don’t just see a younger version of myself; I see the embodiment of innocence, joy, and vulnerability. I visualize holding that little girl in my arms, showering her with the love, care, and comfort she deserves. As I cuddle up with her, I create a safe space where she can feel cherished and protected. In doing so, I’m not just loving her; I’m loving myself by acknowledging the journey that has led me to where I am today and honoring my strength. This act of nurturing my inner child is an expression of self-love, a reminder to treat myself with kindness, compassion, and understanding, just as I would my own daughters. I encourage you to do the same this spring—showing love to every aspect and every version of you past and present.
