Tempeh Bacon

Tempeh Bacon is an easy and delicious vegan bacon substitute. It’s smoky in flavor, made with minimal ingredients and ready in under 10 minutes!

I love the following about tempeh:

  • Tempeh is a great protein substitute, only 4 ozs = 20 grams of protein.
  • Tempeh is a good dairy-free source of calcium. 1 cup of tempeh contains about 2/3 of the calcium found in 1 cup of whole milk.
  • Tempeh contains prebiotics, which may help promote digestive health and potentially reduce inflammation.

Tempeh bacon is my favorite way to eat tempeh, and today I thought I’d share how to make your own at home!

Ingredients:

Lightlife Brand Multigrain or Vegetable Tempeh
Juice of 1 lime
2 T. Coconut Aminos (could also use Tamari)
1 T. Bragg’s apple cider vinegar or rice wine vinegar (optional)
3 T. olive oil
1 tsp. freshly grated ginger or garlic
1 tsp. sesame oil
*If you want to add smoky flavor to your tempeh add 1-2 tsp. liquid smoke

Directions:

Cut tempeh into 1/2 inch strips or 1 inch cubes and make sure to toss well in the marinade.  I typically like to marinate for at least 2-3 hours, sometimes all day and toss through out the day to make sure all pieces are coated well.

This tempeh is great pan sautéed in coconut oil (3-4 minutes on each side) or oven baked for approx. 20 minutes, turning once halfway through.

If preferred, you can steam your tempeh first before marinating (not required, but will absorb the marinade slightly better)
