This season, I have been reflecting on the bone broth trend and I’m ready to move forward to the next thing. I recently announced that my SOUP cleanse will no longer contain bone broth. While there are certainly benefits to animal bone broth, there are ways to achieve those positive effects that are even healthier than consuming the popular broth. That is why we will now be making a plant-based mineral broth fortified with Further Food Collagen Peptides moving forward!
The main draw of bone broth is that it is a good source of collagen and collagen is important to our bodies for many different reasons. For one, our bodies are made up of tons of connective tissues. Those tissues provide structure and form various muscles, cartilage, tendons and more. The main protein within all of that connective tissue is collagen, which is why it is important that we have a healthy production of it. Collagen can also improve digestion. The healthier our collagen levels, the less prone we will be to various digestive disorders.
Collagen also supports strong and healthy skin, hair and nails. In various studies, collagen has been proven to improve skin elasticity as well as moisture. In other studies, collagen proved important for healing skin wounds and hair regrowth. It has also been known to boost metabolism function. Collagen is important for increasing muscle mass and skeletal muscle burns more calories than any other tissue in the body. Therefore, because an increase in muscle mass means an increase in metabolism to support the tissue, an increase in collagen production means an increase in metabolism. Collagen is also key for cardiovascular health and it can help to support and improve joint health as well.
Some of the best vegetarian sources to support collagen growth in the human body are kale, shiitake mushrooms, carrots and red pepper. My vegan broth is loaded with those ingredients plus a ton of other nutrient-dense herbs and vegetables. Another exciting aspect of the new broth is that it contains lots of micro minerals. This is imperative because most of us are not getting enough minerals in our everyday diets. Minerals are key to countless bodily functions from building strong bones, to transmitting nerve impulses, and so much more. I am so happy that I will be able to support cleansers’ mineral levels with this new broth. Since I am so dedicated to using the highest quality vegetables and herbs, the broth will never taste exactly the same – though I promise it will always be delicious.
Here is the updated healing broth recipe for the SOUP Cleanse. It’s amazing to make at home in batches for sipping throughout the day and for making soups.
Makes approx 20 – 16 oz. jars
1 T. black peppercorns
2 T. sea salt
2 T. olive oil
2 onions white or yellow, chopped
2 cups celery, diced
6 carrots, peeled and diced
1 bunch cilantro, chopped
1 bunch parsely, chopped
4 cups spinach
2 red bell pepper, chopped
2 cups butternut squash, diced
1 cup, dried mixed mushroom medley
4 sheets wakame or kelp seaweed
8-10 garlic cloves, crushed
1/4 cup fresh ginger, chopped
1/4 cup fresh turmeric, chopped
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
Option to season additionally with Herbamare
After all ingredients have been prepped, place everything in a 12 quart stock pot. Fill with cold filtered water until about 2 inches from the top. Turn heat to medium, you don’t need to bring to a full boil. Once heated fully and under a boil reduce your heat to low for 4-6 hours.
Turn stovetop off and allow to cool, then carefully strain the broth. Once broth has cooled, pour into glass containers or mason jars.
For added collagen bonus, I add FurtherFood Collagen Peptides to every 16oz jar (2 spoonfuls per jar).
